Groundbreaking Ceremony Planned for Pheasant Exhibit
KEWAUNEE, WI – Kewaunee County’s Bruemmer Park Zoo officially has a new attraction and there will be a new exhibit coming soon. Three life-size animal statues installed by the Kewaunee County Promotions & Recreation Department will be dedicated at Zoobilee at the end of September and ground will be broken on an expansive pheasant exhibit, which is part of the park’s master plan.
The statues of a lion, rhinoceros, and zebra, all made from a cast resin mold mixed with fiberglass and hand painted, which were purchased online from The Interior Gallery by the Zoological Society of Kewaunee County (ZSKC), have been installed by parks staff along with fencing and landscaping, thanks to a generous donor from the Bruemmer family. Steve Bruemmer, grandson of Leo Bruemmer and great-nephew of Otto Bruemmer, the sons of Kewaunee County Judge Louis Bruemmer, whom Bruemmer Park was named in honor of in 1930, had donated $20,000 last December to the ZSKC for the statues, which will be dedicated in his honor at the fall fundraiser for the zoo.
In spring 2022, an elephant statue will join the group in the green space of the lower portion of the zoo. It will be a metal sculpture created by Mike Remme of Kewaunee RV & Campground, who also made “Melvin” the metal giraffe, which was installed in 2018. This statue will also be paid for through an additional donation from Mr. Bruemmer.
“We couldn’t be more thankful for the generosity of Mr. Bruemmer as well as our many other donors through the years that have helped grow and maintain Bruemmer Park Zoo,” said Dave Myers, Kewaunee County Promotion & Recreation Director.
“These life-size animal statues make Bruemmer Park Zoo unique, and the more that we can offer our visitors, the more likely that they’ll support us and our efforts in return,” said Pam Zander, President of the Zoological Society of Kewaunee County.
The statues aren’t the only improvements being funded by Mr. Bruemmer’s generosity. He also gave $100,000 as part of a matching donation for an expansive pheasant exhibit that has been designed to house more than a dozen different species of the bird. Matching contributions have been made by Kewaunee County as well as the ZSKC, bringing the exhibit’s overall budget to $300,000. The exhibit is being designed by Dimension IV from Green Bay. Bidding on construction is expected to open in September.
“Bruemmer Park Zoo has not had a new exhibit in decades, and this expansive pheasant exhibit is the perfect addition. It’s going to set our zoo apart from other zoos and be a great attraction,” said Dave Myers, Kewaunee County Promotion & Recreation Director.
“We hope to house ornamental pheasants such as Lady Amherst’s pheasant, Red Golden pheasant, Yellow Golden pheasant, Silver pheasant, Impeyan pheasant, Swinehoe’s pheasant, and Reeves’s pheasant. This exhibit along with adding an environmental education center for visitors are both a big part of our master plan,” said Pam Zander, President of the Zoological Society of Kewaunee County.
Zoobilee sponsored by Piggly Wiggly – Kewaunee will be held at Bruemmer Park Zoo, E4280 CTH F, Kewaunee on Saturday, September 25, 2021 from 10AM-4PM. In addition to the life-size animal statue dedication scheduled for 11:30AM and the groundbreaking ceremony on the pheasant exhibit scheduled at NOON, the event will also include a car show, a variety of activities for kids, wagon rides, food, and drinks. Admission is FREE, donations are welcome. All proceeds will directly benefit the zoo.
