Blessing of the Fleet

ALGOMA, WI - Lakeshore communities in Kewaunee County have come together to remember the June 23, 2016 Algoma Marina fire that resulted in the damage of numerous boats with the "1st Annual Blessing of the Fleet"  that was held on June 22, 2018.

The public event honored the work of the Algoma Fire Department.

Pastor Chris Jackson of St.  John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Algoma led a “Blessing of the Fleet” for the Port of Algoma as boats lined up and passed under an arc of water before prayer, which in part wished anglers a bountiful fishing season.

Leading up to the actual blessing, State Representative Joel Kitchens read a proclamation from Governor Scott Walker and Algoma Mayor Wayne Schmitt said a few words as well as a few other public figures shared their stories.

Before and after the event, which featured live music, Andy Lafond of Lafond's Fish Market in Kewaunee put on an “old fashioned” Trout Boil at Sunrise Cove Marina with part of the proceeds going to the Algoma Fire Department.
